Preaching To The Wind

It was in 1974 that I decided to look at "Humanoid"/"UFOnaut"/"Occupant" reports. As noted elsewhere I was openly laughed at and even ridiculed for doing so. "The silly nonsense won't get you any respect in the filed" I was told time and again. My response was always "Well, if you think these are intelligently controlled craft then they must be operated by someone or something and we can learn more about what is going on from the reports"

"Ho ho ho! We know who is flying these craft -Mr Adamski told us!"

Well, if the con man says so and you believe him...

The one thing that I found was that if someone was interested and wanted to get involved in the work they did not last long. The Dream sealed it. The "Dream" usually involved the person in question dreaming about finding themselves in an isolated location (for me it was a shed of some type with a window) and they witness a UFO landing and see entities. Basically, it was a dream created by the mind filling itself with so many reports and does not just happen with Ufology. I once worked, as a very young man, at a firm that created and sold prints of paintings. It involved rolling up prints, putting them into cardboard tubes -after a couple days I had a vivid dream in which I was carrying out this work -and I never quit the job!

But some saw this "Dream" as a warning. Or it just spooked them so much they did not want to look at another entity report.

For that reason I spent 51 years reading and listening to and watching absolutely anything on alleged real life entity encounters. My friend in the United States, Travis Whitehurst even sent me tapes of Budd Hopkins' original talks and lectures to MUFON (those tapes were stolen long ago). What concerned me was that something was going on with hypnosis that I was very unsure about but I and many others were assured that all of the work was 100% peer reviewed. It never was.

On one tape, Hopkins described how one percipient reported seeing an animal -deer or similar. After that nothing. He decided that the percipient needed to be pushed to try to break through what he called a memory block -deliberately created to stop the percipient recalling what happened. I thought "okay" after all this was all being peer reviewed. As things progressed it turned out that the deer or whatever was seen was in fact...aliens. Small aliens and they matched descriptions from cases we knew of. Short, large headed -but NOT "Greys". Even the late Ann Druffel noted that before Hopkins we had short, large headed entities but never "Grays" (she really seemed to take exception to people writing "Greys" rather than the American spelling of "Grays"!).

However, Hopkins revealed that it was not just a sighting of entities but that there was missing time (I referred to these cases in the 1970s as "Time Loss Incidents"). And pushing the percipient even further under hypnosis "you need to break through this and see what really happened" we got on board experiences. This then jumped to examinations similar to that reported by the Hills. That got pushed even further until we eventually had the generational child -to-adult life time abductions. Eventually we even had reports of abductions of the mother and recall of Greys examining the percipient in the womb...oh, and even further past life abductions by Greys.

Eventually, we ended up with the whole "Grey phenomenon" and even old cases being re-written to suggest or state that the entities seen were Greys. Apparently, Adamski indicated that he had seen Greys -I read all of his books and I can tell you that was and is an outright fabrication. A lie. Hopkins, Jacobs et al created the Greys in the 1980s long after Adamski's death in April, 1965.

There is a pattern that you can trace from someone getting interested in UFOs to their "realisation" that they were abductees and that includes investigators such as Dr Leo Sprinkle, Raymond E. Fowler and Dr Karla Turner (her books are amazing as you can follow the progression from just an interest to "I was abducted!"these are text books).

What I keep wondering about is how many people do actually encounter entities, small, large headed or otherwise and do not want to become a Ufology media circus freak? In fact, if you look at the MUFON page where you can report sightings and encounters entity reports rarely get a follow up. It was a money spinner at one time but now "Disclosure" and all the other grifter claims are far more important -they bring in more money.

The people who went to Hopkins and others (in the UK Flying Saucer Review basically turned hypnosis sessions into "parlour events" with wives and friends attending) probably had encounters but those should be allowed to be recalled naturally unless memories are causing someone such stress that hypnosis will relieve that. Oh, what were "abductees" have now been renamed "Contactees" because it is more social media friendly.

I would suggest that (and here we are taking the step to accepting that these are genuine encounters) maybe only 1-2% of encounter percipients report what happened. A lot of reports still being cited a genuine incidents can be easily proven to be dream paralysis, altered states and many others were press or Ufologist fake cases and some were not UFO connected. During the 1954 French UFO wave witnesses observed a landed UFO and an entity carrying out repairs. This was in fact known at the time to be a bus driver and a broken down bus (albeit after dark). Clearly meteors, aircraft and other normal things were reported as unexplained. Ufologists such as Jacques Vallee KNOW this but still use those reports to grift on.

What appear to have been genuine accounts went un-investigated and we only have details from newspapers that were confirmed years later. Ufologist angrily stating that journalists got certain details in accounts wrong are laughable -they only decided to get off their asses and investigate some 20-40 years after the event. Of all the humanoid/Occupant reports on the record it is a shock to say that only 5% (I am being generous) were ever investigated.

Either through using hypnosis or ignoring reports for various reasons ("don't believe them!"/ "I'm not getting involved in that stuff!" or downright prejudice against witnesses due to skin colour) Ufologists have screwed things up. We have lost so much and we are still probably losing much more testimony. Ufology is not and never was a "scientific study" but has pushed and promoted charlatans, hoaxes and fabricated research to draw in publicity and through that money.

It is absolutely of vital importance that the accounts from people who see entities by a landed craft or have onboard experiences are recorded. They have to be looked at and investigated with an open but sceptical (NOT debunking) mind. If what they claim is true that is very important and although it may be anecdotal there could be physical evidence associated with encounters that could tell us more.

With reports from the 1950s -2000s going un-investigated we have to remember that once a witness passes that experience/account vanishes.

Udo Wartena and His Alleged UFO Encounter of 1940

On some sites the date of the incident is given as January whereas it is clearly recorded as May, 1940.

"It was also 7 years before the Roswell crash and 17 years before the first satellites orbited the earth." is also cited yet a flying saucer crash that never happened being cited is pointless and I find another statement that: "This case may present the best information on why aliens are visiting our planet" whereas it does not. It is basically an account with no back up evidence or even evidence that it really happened.

Udo’s encounter took place mid-morning early in May, 1940 at his mining claim in the forest near the base of Boulder Mountain, a short distance from Canyon Ferry Lake, near the small town of Townsend, southeast of Helena in Montana. Udo, a 37-year-old miner of Dutch origin was working in the area part-time for the Northwest Mining Company.

During the previous month he had found a glacial deposit at the base of the mountain, which showed indications of gold-bearing ore. He began working the site in his spare time and first cleared an old and neglected ditch, which ran around the mountainside, using it to divert the water he would need in his mining from a nearby stream.

While moving some large boulders, he heard a humming or droning sound, which he first took to be aircraft, which flew over the area occasionally from Great Falls base in the north. At first Udo took little notice of the sound, but when the noise continued he thought that a vehicle had driven up so he climbed up onto higher ground.

A large disc-shaped object, measuring about thirty five feet high and over a hundred feet across, was hovering a short distance away just above the meadow where he had built his dam. Udo described it as like “two soup plates, one inverted over the other” and resembling “stainless steel in color, though not as bright and shiny”.

As he stood watching, thinking at first that it was an airship, a circular stairway with a solid bottom forming part of the craft’s hull was let down and a man who descended began walking towards him.

“As I was somewhat more than interested,” Udo later wrote, “I went to meet him. He stopped when we were ten or twelve feet apart. He was a nice looking man, seemingly about my age. He wore a light gray pair of overalls, a tam (a common term in that period derived from “Tam O ‘Shanter” – a circular cap) of the same material on his head and on his feet were slippers or moccasins”.

The man came and shook his hand, apologizing that they had not known anyone was in the area, explaining that it was not their custom to interrupt or allow themselves to be seen. “He asked me if it would be alright if they took some water, and as I could not see why not, I said ‘sure’. He then gave a signal and a hose or pipe was let down. His English was like mine, but he spoke slowly, as if he were a linguist and had to pick his way.”

The man asked Udo what he was doing and this was explained. Udo, asked if he would be interested in coming aboard the ship, went willingly and without any sense of fear. As he got underneath the craft, Udo described the humming as “not loud, though it seemed to go through you”; once inside the ship the noise was hardly noticeable except what came up the stairwell.

INSIDE THE CRAFT

“We entered into a room about twelve by sixteen feet, with a close-fitting sliding door on the farther end, indirect lighting near the ceiling and nice upholstered benches around the sides. There was an older man already in the room, plainly dressed, but his hair was snow white. I then noticed that the younger man’s hair was also white.”

Udo described him as being “young and strong-looking” and having clear, almost translucent skin.

Perhaps this explains the curious fact that Udo seems to have asked their age, even before asking their origin; clearly there was something about their appearance to prompt such an enquiry.

The men answered that one was “about six hundred years old” as we measure time and the other was “over nine hundred years” of age. They informed him that they knew over five hundred languages and were learning ours and improving upon them all the time.

When asked why they wanted to take water from the stream and not the lake, the younger man replied that, “the water was good and was free of algae (as if they had retrieved the same before) and it was convenient”.

Many years later Udo indicated to a family member that hydrogen extracted from the water was in fact the fuel source for the craft.

Udo then asked what caused the noise of the craft and was not only shown the mechanism that powered the disc, but also given what appears to be a full and open discussion of the key principle involved, in the following words:”…’as you noticed we are floating above the ground, and though the ground slopes the ship is level. There are in the outside rim, two flywheels, one turning one way and the other in the opposite direction’.

“He explained [that] this gives the ship its own gravitation or rather overcomes the gravitational pull of the Earth and other planets, the sun and stars; and through the pull of the stars and planets…to ride on like you do when you sail on ice.

An interesting analogy. Elsewhere Udo described the ‘flywheels’ or rings as being about three feet wide and several inches thick, separated by rods turned by motors and next to ‘battery of transformer’-like units all around the inside perimeter of the circular ship.

Udo was told that the two revolving rings or wheels developed an electromagnetic force, a term he did not understand at the time and inferred from what he learned that the ability to develop a cheaper and more practical energy source was of the utmost importance to mankind.

He was also told that the craft was able to focus on a distant star and use its energy to draw itself through space at speeds faster than light, quote: “skipping upon the light waves”. These 1940 explanations seem remarkably similar to the propulsion method Robert Lazar claimed to have learned while working on alien craft in possession of the U.S. government at ‘Area 51′ and also sounds very much like some of the theories now being advanced by physicists:…the creation of a local distortion of space-time is expanded behind the spaceship, contracted ahead of it, yielding a hyper surfer like motion faster that the speed of light as seen by observers.

In essence, on the outgoing leg of its journey the spaceship is pushed away from Earth and pulled toward its distant destination by the engineered local expansion of space-time itself.

Udo then wrote “I then asked them where they got the energy to run such a large ship? They said from the sun and other stars and would store this in batteries, though this was for emergency use only. They carried another source but did not explain this to me…”

Asked where they came from, he was told they lived on a distant planet and gave its name – unfortunately not recorded by Udo – and pointed in its direction. Udo asked what their object was for coming to Earth?

“Well.” he said, “as you have noticed, we look pretty much as you do, so we mingle with your people, gather information, leave instructions or give help where needed.” Explaining that they were monitoring the progression and retrogression of our societies, the man claimed that they lived among us from time to time, a clear statement indicating long-term covert alien surveillance prior to 1940. Udo wrote that he did not understand what was meant by them “giving help where needed” but he did not feel it proper to ask about it further.

When Udo asked if they knew of Jesus Christ and about religion he was told that they would “like to speak of these things but are unable. We cannot interfere in any way”. The area of religion and belief systems was to be the only question the aliens refused to discuss.

During his time on board, Udo was invited to be examined for impurities in his system by an “X-ray like machine” which passed over him. Little was recorded about this examination however and Udo seems to have attached scant importance to it.

While talking with the two men, a light had come on which Udo believed indicated that the water had been taken care of. He mentioned that he felt it was time for him to leave.

The alien’s response was to ask if he was interested in going with them, to which Udo responded: ” I said that I thought it would be interesting, but felt it would inconvenience too many people. Later, I wondered why I said that”.

Some time later, Udo recalled an incident about two years previously where a young man had vanished nearby without a trace, despite days of searching by a sheriff’s team. He wondered if the young man had met the same craft and gone with them.

As he started to leave the ship, they suggested to Udo that he “…’tell no-one, as no one would believe me at the time’, but in years to come I could tell about this experience. When I walked away from the ship they raised the stairway, and when I got a couple of hundred feet away from the ship I turned around.

“A number [of] more portholes had opened up and though I could not see anyone, I felt sure they could see me, anyway I waved at them. The ship then rose straight up until it cleared the trees, then while circling slightly, it practically rose straight up and in a very short while was completely out of sight.

“As I didn’t have a watch, I did not know for sure how long I had been with them, but according to the sun it was around noon, or somewhat around two hours.”

Udo later related how some type of “energy” had permeated the area and that he lost his strength for several hours and was unable to walk. When his strength finally returned he went over to where the huge craft had hovered, finding only crushed grass where the stairway had rested. Later, still feeling overwhelmed by his unexpected experience, he walked back to his base camp

The Ufologists loudly shouted out that the information Wartena learnt and reported "was similar to Bob Lazar’s while at Area 51". How does referring to one of the biggest grifters in Ufology whose whole false history of being at Area 51 help this account?

Again I point out that Udo never spoke a word about the encounter for decades. We have no idea what frame of mind he was in at the time of his death. That there is no diary or note book entry dating back to 1940 or even his wife being told points to this being a report only deserving a VERY Low classification.

Let's say that Udo was reporting what he genuinely believed -a one off experience in 1940. Firstly, despite what is claimed, pulp science fiction was a big deal at the time and we do not know whether he read the pulps or if he ever visited the movies to watch serials such as Flash Gordon or Buck Rogers. If -IF- he considered this a real encounter we are left with the possibility of an altered state experience with the movie serials or pulps creating what he saw. Remember the reported weakness after the encounter?

Physiological effects following an altered state experience can include lingering fatigue, disorientation, mood changes like anxiety or euphoria, and changes in sensory perception or pain perception. However, these effects are highly variable and depend on the specific type of experience and the individual, with some experiencing profound shifts in perception or emotional states, and others experiencing only mild, temporary symptoms.

We should look at each report as it comes in but so many of these "early encounters" are reported 30, 40 or 50+ years later with no one else ever having been told. People who were told are usually reported as having passed away -parents or siblings and they kept the incident secret. It means we have a story and nothing more. That some Ufologists literally berate other Ufologists for not taking the Wartena case seriously is almost laughable.

As noted, this report would be categorised as Very Low.

"Oriental Eyes" and Skin Colouration Noted In Entity Reports

Regarding skin colouration reported in UFO such as "yellowish" are all based on environment, etc. Lighter skin in Europe to absorb more Vitamin D, In fact the rarest skin colour is blue and that is caused by a rare genetic blood disorder called methemoglobinemia ( where the iron in hemoglobin is oxidized from its normal ferrous state to the ferric state, rendering it unable to carry oxygen effectively) or even certain acquired conditions like argyria (Argyria is a rare condition where the skin, nails and other tissues develop a permanent blue-grey discolouration due to chronic exposure to silver)

Humans have different skin colours due to a combination of genetics and environmental factors the primary one being the intensity of ultra violet radiation from the Sun. Therefore, you find that people in sunny regions closer to the equator have darker skin to protect against sun damage by producing more melanin, while those in areas with less sun have lighter skin, which helps the body produce essential vitamin D. Skin tones can vary in the various regions from lighter to very dark.

Skin colouration does not indicate anything other than that and humans are humans and as for "green skin" olive skin naturally has yellowish-green undertones. As we know absolutely nothing about alien life forms we can only assume that "as on Earth so in Space"!

We then have "they had eyes like Chinese" or "they had very slanted eyes like Japanese people" (Mrs Church, New Zealand, August, 1944) and "little Oriental space man". Despite those descriptions the "slanted eyes" can also be applied to some white people although, as we are about to learn, it does not depend on ethnicity.

The 1974 Aveley, Essex alleged UFO abduction had a botched investigation but it needs to be pointed out that the more humanoid entities matched the one sighted at Ewloe in 1975 not to mention other reports where very light skin and pinkish eyes were noted and the clothing matched.

The term "slanted eyes" is frowned on in modern times although not everyone knows to call it an "epicanthic fold" or epicanthus. This is a skin fold of the upper eye-lid that covers the inner corner (medial canthus) of the eye. Variation occurs in the nature of this feature and the presence of "partial epicanthic folds" or "slight epicanthic folds" is noted in the relevant literature. Various factors influence whether epicanthic folds form, including ancestry, age, and certain medical conditions.

The primary cause of the epicanthic fold is the hypertrophy of the preseptal (anterior to the orbital septum) portion of the orbicularis oculi muscle -a sphincter-like muscle in the face that closes the eyelids. It arises from the nasal part of the frontal bone, from the frontal process of the maxilla in front of the lacrimal groove, and from the anterior surface and borders of a short fibrous band, the medial palpebral ligament

In fact, the shape of the epicanthic fold has led to four types being recognised:

· Epicanthus supraciliaris runs from the brow, curving downwards towards the lachrymal sac.

· Epicanthus palpebralis begins above the upper tarsus and extends to the inferior orbital rim.

· Epicanthus tarsalis originates at the upper eyelid crease and merges into the skin near the medial canthus. This is the type most often found in East Asians.

· Epicanthus inversus runs from the lower eyelid skin over the medial canthus and extends to the upper lid.^[

When it comes top "Ethnogeographic distribution" one has to thank Wikipedia:

The highest frequency of occurrence of epicanthic folds is found in specific populations or ethnicities: East Asians, Southeast Asians, Central Asians, North Asians, Polynesians, Micronesians, Indigenous peoples of the Americas, Sámi people and some African people (especially among Khoisan and Nilotic people). Among South Asians, they occur at very high frequencies among the Nepalis, Bhutanese, Northeast Indians, Kirati people and certain Adivasi (the heterogeneous tribal groups across the Indian subcontinent.The term Adivasi, a 20th-century construct meaning "ancient inhabitants", is now widely used as a self-designation by many of the communities who are officially recognized as "Scheduled Tribes" in India and as "Ethnic minorities" in Bangladesh) tribes of Eastern and Southern India. Also commonly found in Northern India, especially in Kashmir. The Hazara people in Afghanistan and Pakistan commonly have this trait. Some people in Eastern/Northern Pakistan have this trait.

In some of these populations, the trait is almost universal. This is especially true in Japan and South Korea, where a majority, up to 90% in some estimations, of adults naturally have this feature. In Southern China and Southeast Asia it's about 70 % having the feature, while 30 % naturally have double eyelids.

The epicanthic fold is often associated with greater levels of fat deposition around the eyeball. The adipose tissue is thought to provide greater insulation for the eye and sinuses from the effects of cold, especially from freezing winds, and to represent an adaptation to cold climates. It has also been postulated that the fold itself may provide a level of protection from snow blindness. Though its appearance in peoples of Southeast Asia can be linked to possible descent from cold-adapted ancestors, this does not explain its occurrence in various African peoples. The epicanthic fold found in many African people has been tentatively linked to protection for the eye from the high levels of ultraviolet light found in desert and semi-desert areas.

The exact evolutionary function and origin of epicanthic folds remains unknown. Scientific explanations include either random variation and selection (presumably sexual selection), or possible adaption to desert environment and/or high levels of ultraviolet light found in high-altitude environments, such as the Himalayas.

It is clear that many physiological aspects of entities encountered at UFO landings are not (in external look at least) dissimilar to humans in eye and skin type. But what of eyes described a pinkish/red (iris and pupil)? Brown is the most common iris colour world-wide and is genetically dominant to all other iris colors. Green is the rarest eye color in less than 5% of the world population. Although there are countless color combinations, the main color groups are classified as brown, blue, gray, hazel, green, and amber. So pink or "red"? Again not unexplainable.

A red or pink-appearing iris in humans is an extremely rare condition and typically caused by albinism, a genetic condition resulting in little or no melanin (pigment) in the eye. The red colour described is not a pigment itself but the result of light reflecting off the tiny blood vessels in the back of the eye and the iris itself becoming visible.

When we consider the fact that in some of these cases the entity is described as pale or "white as a ghost" it could well be albinism is normal.

The bottom line is that we can only go by what is reported and it is interesting that in cases that do seem to be genuine the pink/red and "Chinese" or "Japanese" eye types are common.

Linda Taylor: A Lost Experience With No One To Blame

Considering that I have highlighted so many failures in Ufology when it comes to on board experiences I thought that it was worth noting a case in which all that could possibly be done was but the experience is still lost. In fact, when it comes to the Linda Taylor case you will not find anything online as there was no detailed abduction experience recovered and, therefore, no money or views in it.

The main source for this report is John Hanson and Dawn Holloway’s Haunted Skies (vol. 9 1981-1986; pp. 148-149).

On the 10^th January, 1982, Linda Taylor was driving along the East Lancashire road. It was 1900 hrs and in the rear seat of the car was her mother and up to that point it had been a normal journey. Then they spotted a strange “light” behind some trees that was performing strange zig-zagging movements before shooting up into the sky and disappearing. Linda’s car then began to oose speed and so she changed gear and put her foot down on the accelerator; the car began vibrating and the headlights flashed on and off.

A 1930s style black car then “appeared” in front of her own with its bumper almost touching her own car bumper. The car had no lights and no number plate that could be seen and as in such vehicles (in some cases the windows are small and square) there was a small, oval rear window. Linda stated:

“I could see the driver. He was a very large figure, with broad shoulders, dressed in dark clothing, with a bowler hat. ..my mother shouted, ‘Look out, we are going to crash into it’. I changed down into second gear, to avoid crashing into it, and opened the window, thinking to shout at bthe man, and saw a UFO covered in lights, each about five feet in diameter – all different colours. I screamed and put my head back inside the car. As I did that, the car in front vanished.”

Linda then pulled into a garage forecourt just before the M63 motorway and with her mother watched the huge “light” and as they watched the object began to circle the garage. Linda explained:

“It was as if time stood still. I am sure it circled us, three times, although my mum thought it was only once – then it stopped above a tree, made a quick movement, tilted, and began to vibrate, before rising up into the sky.”

As far as the duo was concerned it had just been a UFO sighting and Linda dropped her mother off at her home in Hulme and the drove back home. On arriving home and parking the car, Linda realised that it was almost an hour later than it should have been. She was very shaken and felt nausea as she knocked on the front door of her house. Her husband opened the door and, looking at her, thought Linda had been involved in an accident:

“I told him to phone my mother, to find out what had happened, and went straight to the toilet, where I was violently sick. I then noticed my legs were covered in strange black and red marks. They disappeared, the following day. I kept quiet about what had happened for 9 months, but after seeing a TV documentary about UFOs, contacted UFO researchers Michael Sachs and Harry Harris, who arranged for me to be hypnotically regressed.”

Here is where the Reader might expect to hear about Linda being placed on a table of sorts and examined by aliens of one type or another. In fact, despite hypnotic regression Linda could remember no more than is outlined here so I will look at this as an utter sceptic.

Linda and her mother were too busy watching the UFO (a misidentification) and did not see the car over take them and they then watched something else they perceived to be a UFO and neither can get the story straight on this – it circled three times ot once? Watching a UFO programme on TV Linda fell into the trap of believing that she had been abducted which is why she remembered nothing else under hypnosis. Even Ufologists have fallen into that trap and suddenly believed that they had life long abductions. File closed.

Now I will look at it based on what Linda recalled. Firstly, yes, it is possible that concentrating on the UFO meant that Linda had not noticed the car over-taking. A 1930s car on the road in 1982 would not be bizarre. I knew a couple of men who used to be car enthusiasts and restored “junk” 1930s cars as a hobby as well as for profit. In 2020 I watched an old 1930s Ford being driven along a road and it looked in immaculate condition and was not as loud as I thought it would be. The man wore a bowler hat; sorry, I can find nothing peculiar there especially if the person driving the car was into everything vintage as some people are. He looked big; these old cars are quite compact and if the person driving it is big built then nothing strange here. The car “disappeared” and here is where I think something may be unusual.

Linda and her mother had been watching the “light” so that may have distracted both of them into not noticing the car pulling in front. Remember that Linda wound down the car window to give the man a “red ear” but looked up and saw the large UFO and then screamed. Looking forward the old car was gone. This may well be when something happened which may or may not have involved the car in front and that would be pure wild speculation but if we look at this based on other cases.

Possibility 1 is that it could be when Linda screamed that something happened and then they were both placed back in the car but later on and so the old car had simply continued its journey.

Possibility 2 is that when Linda screamed “something” was done to prepare the women (I can find no information on what her mother described) for what was about to happen; perhaps taking control of the car and both women so things were “slowed down” enough so that the other car was far enough away as its driver was of no interest.

In other words the women could have undergone an on board experience at that location.

Possibility 3 is that it was put into the minds of the two women to drive into the deserted garage forecourt to stop and watch the UFO. This is a strong possibility as otherwise it is unusual that a large object that had frightened both and made Linda scream when she saw it was considered something to stop and observe. Yes, it could have been curiosity getting the better of them but worth noting.

Possibility 4 is that the initial sighting and then the observation at the forecourt (where there seems to be some confusion) was merely “them” making sure their selection was the right one. Again, in UFO reports there are cases of UFOs being seen and moving in close to witnesses before a later on board event.

This gives us two possible points in the account where something may have happened; the road when the car overtook(?) and the garage forecourt. But there is Possibility 5 and that is that Linda and her mother did not have on board experiences but that Linda did on her journey home after dropping off her mother and when she was alone as her mother being older would be of no interest?. The nausea and shock is something noted in the aftermath of on board experiences and then we have the black and red markings that disappeared; again something noted following on board experiences.

It is obvious that the events of that night puzzled and concerned Linda. It may well be that following the TV programme on UFOs she was not convinced that she had been abducted but an investigation might provide answers or even an alternative solution. Harry Harris’ files are gone (we know where some are but we cannot access them) but even those would not provide any answers.

In this case Linda waited nine months until she learnt of a possible way to get at the truth as nothing had been recalled over that period. The hypnosis failed. No aliens, no medical examination or any of the usual recalled details. Linda’s car was, apparently, undamaged so she had not been in an accident after dropping her mother off. The dark markings indicate that something happened as does the shock and vomiting but just what is complete speculation and there are other seeming time loss reports where not even hypnosis can break through a mental block -pushing and pushing to break such a block is what got us the “Greys”.

I have no doubt that something did happen to at least Linda Taylor but if it has not been recalled after 42 years I doubt it ever will be. The debate might well be whether recalling what happened that night would be good for Linda Taylor?

The Case of Maria Elodia Pretzel and the Night Visitor

People assume that because I give higher strangeness ratings to multi-witness reports or reports where there is independent corroboration of some kind that I dismiss all other cases. No, that is not how it works because although it is one person’s account there can be additional factors that make it more credible. The Jean Hingley “Mince Pie Martians” report could be easily dismissed but at the time there were a number of UFO reports and then there was the ground trace that the percipient could not have made by herself.

Yes, there are reports that when you read the first paragraph it is easy to say sleep paralysis or even hypnagogic state. Even so, as far as I am concerned, those reports are still worth noting -as is the fact that “veteran” Ufologists and “ghost hunters” cite these as reports as evidence. If you are a “Thirty year veteran Ufologist” and you hear of sleep paralysis and immediately jump to “alien abduction” or a “Ghost hunter” and this is all a sign of a demon or paranormal activity it might be time that you moved on to actually reading books because all you are doing is pushing fantasy.

A solo witness or percipient with no independent back-up witnesses is one whose word you have to take but still gets a low strangeness rating. During 1968 there was another alleged world-wide UFO wave and I found out a long time ago that around 79-85% of UFO reports during these periods are anything but unidentified. However, if you have a period of UFO activity not publicised until much later (in other words some Ufologists are aware but not the public) then the reason for someone to make up a close encounter story for publicity or whatever is not there. One case that I read of with interest at the time was the 1968 Villa Carlos Paz incident.

At the time Argentinian Ufologist Luis Burgos was unable to investigate but luckily Oscar A. Galindez wrote a lengthy report for the Flying Saucer Review (The Anthropomorphic Entity at Villa Carlos Paz vol. 26, no. 5 pp. 8-17) and its location layout map and illustrations were far superior to most other FSR reports at the time. It was also interesting to read an article by Luis Burgos who asked Daniel Jose Lopez, FAO, Bs. As, to visit the location and interview the witness in 1986 some 18 years after the incident had occurred (posted in English as The Night Visitor, Sign Of The Times website). Burgos wrote:

“From the incomparable 1968 Argentinean - and worldwide - UFO wave, I remember that one of the most widely known and controversial cases involved an encounter between a young woman and a strange entity in the mountain ranges of Córdoba. Much has been said since then: that it was a hoax with the purpose of attracting tourists, that the protagonist herself confected the story, to a media-driven creation. Even today, naysayers hiding behind curtains will have a field day with it”.

Well, a UFO incident not attracting debunkers is no rarity but Burgos noted:

“And the trip yielded results, since the eyewitness interview presented fundamental evidence suggesting that "something indeed happened at the time". A story that was consistent, detailed”.

The Villa Carlos Paz is described as a classic Argentinean tourist destination, located some 30 kilometres west of Cordoba. Along Route No. 20 and some two kilometres from the centre of town is the "La Cuesta" motel. This motel is owned by Mr. Pedro J. Pretzel and his 19 years old daughter, Maria, helped in running the establishment. Maria Elodia Pretzel was described at the time as a determined young woman who was well thought of in her community. It was ascertained at the time of the encounter that she did not read science fiction. Early in 1968 she had undergone surgery (I can find no reference regarding what the surgery was for and Galindez does not even refer to it). After recovery, she assisted in managing the hotel.

At approximately 0105 hrs on the 14^th June, 1968, Mr. Pretzel was driving home along Route 20 when he saw "two large red lights, side-by-side over the road, too far apart to be the tail-lights of another car" and around 100 metres from his motel. It is worth noting that there were no street lights in the area at that time. As Pretzel was within 50 metres of the lights he realised that they were much higher off the ground than he had assumed; around 1.40 to 1.50 metres in fact. The lights were also much further apart than any vehicle tail lights; the space between them being approximately 5-6 metres. The red lights reflected off of the road surface and he believed that thewy were actually attached to a large object that he could not see due to the darkness. Turning into the motel parking space he halted his van, got out and entered the motel by the side door

Pretzel noticed that the regular lights in the dining room were off but that the fluorescent lights were still on -as they were in the kitchen. Looking around he found the laundry light was on and this was unusual as his daughter was quite conscientious about such things. He called out to his daughter assuming that she was still up and about but got no reply and so he went into the laundry. Here he found his daughter on her knees and distraught and all she say was “A man! A man!” This is where the Burgos account varies and this may be due to a poor translation as he writes; “he headed for her bedroom, only to find the young woman spread out on the bed, unconscious” in fact, Galindez wrote: “he found her on her knees on the floor and huddled over a divan, her head between her hands and her elbows propped on the divan”. This is why original accounts are important to get a hold of.

After his daughter burst into tears, Pretzel set off to search for the intruder who had put his daughter in such a state. The cellar beneath the laundry was empty as were all the other rooms in the building. He then went outside and searched but found no one. One thing he did note was that the two red lights were now gone; this was the UFO sighting component of the event. Pretzel then went back inside to comfort his daughter and ask her what had happened.

At 0102 hrs, Maria Elodia had accompanied two guests to the side door and car park and then closed the door, though he could not remember whether she had locked it. She then switched off the ordinary lights on the ground floor and mezzanine as well as the decorative lights. The three fluorescent lights were left on all night -the Burgos account makes their being left on seem unusual which it was not. She then walked across the small bar area and through a side door into the kitchen before heading for the laundry. Her intention was to lock the rear door of the building. The lights were still on in the kitchen and laundry but as she was about to lock the back door noticed a bright light showing through the serving hatch and seeming to come from the bar or dining room. This slightly blue glow from around the serving hatch puzzled her as only the three fluorescent lights should be on. Thinking that either her father had returned or a guest had arrived and turned the other lights on, Maria Elodia headed for the dining and as she doorway between the bar and kitchen area she received a shock.

In front of the bar counter, 7 metres from her, stood a 2 metres tall man dressed in a shining light blue, tight-fitting one-piece suit that was made of a material that gave the impression of scales; this covered the hands as feet as well. Around the waist was a narrow blue belt. In the entity’s left hand was a glass-looking sphere which “irradiated a coherent beam of light – light of a faintly pale blue colour, almost white”. The entity was constantly moving this sphere back and forth all the while smiling. He was standing as though he had just stopped mid-stride and the side door leading to the car park was open and Maria Elodia assumed he had come entered through this. Galindez notes that:

“Her first visual contact with the entity produced two simultaneous effects...on one hand she had the sensation that she was being misshaped, drawn out lengthways, and made thinner, particularly her face. It felt as though some invisible and superior force were affecting her whole body and distorting it. She explained that the sensation was in a way rather like the effect of those distorting mirrors that one sees in amusement centres.” While experiencing this she tried to call out but could not “she felt as though her brain was blocked; she used the term “ocupado” occupied. All that she could do was raise her hands to her head and stand there, motionless. A non - accented voice speaking Spanish “as though there were a loudspeaker or transistor radio fixed inside my ears” the words “Don’t be afraid! Don’t be afraid!” (“¡No tengas miedo!”) and this phrase was continuously repeated.

Maria Elodia felt herself suddenly grip the bar counter with both hands – although she had absolutely no recollection of having moved there from the door -18 years later how she was still unable to explain what happened. Is it possible that something else happened? The times given by father and daughter are too tight to suggest missing time so, perhaps, Maria Elodia did moved herself but it was automatic and just not recalled. Whatever, the entity was still on the same spot but now just 3 metres away. The entity was rhythmically moving the sphere in its left hand back and forth. The words “Don’t be afraid!” were repeated as she felt a tingling sensation in her legs as though they “had gone to sleep”.

The entity now raised his right arm, palm of hand upwards and the tips of his fingers were emitting flashing beams of light. It was now that Maria Elodia noticed that on the back of the entity’s was attached a rectangular device which covered the four fingers. It was as the entity had raised its arm that she also felt herself drained of strength and falling backward; but the falling was slowed down and all her muscles were relaxed. This stopped when her head was only 20- 25 cms from the floor -only her heels were in contact with the floor. Her body then began to slowly rise until she was once again standing upright; once again she gripped the top of the counter, however, the entity raised his right arm and once again she fell slowly, but this time to her right and the falling process stopped when her shoulder was 20 – 25cms from the floor. Then, once again, she rose until standing upright and again grabbing the counter. The entity now began to approach her.

The entity moved to the extreme right of the counter moving slowly with one foot straight in front of the other and still smiling away. Maria Elodia now noticed that the tips of the entity’s toes were also emitting luminous beams just like his fingers. The glowing sphere in the entity’s hand now “went out” and the sphere was a dark blue collar. Now she could see that the light had been coming from a number small protuberances resembling truncated cones. When the sphere went out so the repeating of “Don’t be afraid” also stopped. The entity then “began to flex his left forearm until it formed a right angle to his body” and remained motionless in that position for several seconds before turning on his heel in a clock-wise direction to face the side door leading out into the car park. The entity then started to walk towards the door in the “toe of each foot touching the heel of the other foot”. Now the percipient noticed that at that rear the entity was wearing a sort of “pleated skirt” made of the same material as his suit. Still with left arm extended and unlit sphere in hand the entity reached the door and being a little taller than it, lowered his head slightly and walked outside; the door closed behind him but whether he had physically closed it she had no idea.

As the entity left so the tingling sensation left her legs and she tried to escape into the rear rooms but was shaken and stunned. Bracing herself against the wall and counter, she managed to get into the kitchen and then to the laundry where she dropped to her knees against a divan; it was here that her father found her and at no point did she lose consciousness. At 0600 hrs that morning for a few seconds she felt the tingling sensation again in both legs; this happened 2-3 times the next night. Over the following nights she frequently woke up in terror having heard the words “Don’t be afraid!” and it is likely that this was the psychological after effects of the encounter. The emotional state she was in lasted for several days and got worse as her menses started.

Dr. Hugo Vaggione was the ex- director of the Villa Carlos Paz Municipal Hospital and the Pretzels family doctor and because of the after effects of the encounter suggested that Maria Elodia go away for a while and so her father sent her to Salta for three weeks. On her return home she was “fully recovered”.

The investigators checked on times and because Maria Elodia had looked at the alarm clock to give two guests a call and from there it was estimated that the encounter lasted 3- 4 minutes so from seeing the bright light at 0103 hrs and the entity leaving at 0107 or 0108 hrs; her father arriving at 0110 hrs.

What did Burgos reveal from Daniel Jose Lopez’s investigation? Well, a lot of confusion as already noted and this:

“The being advanced toward her with a kindly, calm manner, moving his lips slowly, speaking a strange, melodic language that reminded her of Japanese. He said something like "cling-gling-crish". At a given moment, the young woman felt a sensation of "bubbles in her head" and a feeling of perspiration, but when she touched her neck, she was perfectly dry. Maria Elodia was able to dash for the safety of the counter, even as the entity moved the orb constantly and tried to get near her. She claims that she could hear, in the recesses of her mind, a message that repeated: "Don't be afraid…

“Suddenly, the bright orb went out. The stranger stopped, spun around and withdrew toward the outside door. As he turned, the experiencer was able to see a kind of skirt around him, but the truly uncanny event occurred as he approached the door: it opened by itself and closed as he departed.

“From that moment on, Maria Elodia, who had backed away, remembered nothing more. A few moments later, her father arrived.”

Here we have to wonder whether this was a bad translation or if, after 18 years, Maria Elodia’s memory was playing tricks; although a poor investigation report cannot be ruled out. There is a quote from Dr. Vaggione whose age is given as 33 this must therefore be a quote from the time of the encounter as if the good doctor was 33 some 18 years after the incident then he was a very young ex - hospital director! The doctor described Maria Elodia as a somewhat introverted person but not one given to fantasy.

There were claims of high levels of radiation found at the points where the entity had stood but this appears to be false information from Ufologists and others who never investigated the report.

Checking, Burgos did note:

“There was, however, another close encounter in Argentina with an occupant resembling the one in the Villa Carlos Paz incident. This was the famous encounter at La Florida, in San Luis, where a tall figure, similarly clad, appeared before three fishermen on the night of February 4-5, 1978.”

Interestingly, there were numerous UFO reports on the night of the 13^th /14^th June “and humanoid sightings throughout various provinces in Argentina. Right there, in the vicinity of the "La Cuesta" motel, local residents reported seeing "two very powerful red lights" in flight around 22:00 hours on the evening of June 13.” But the UFO activity was known about in 1968 so nothing new was really added to the case.

Let us say that there was no UFO seen by Mr Pretzel and others that night what are we left with? A young woman working hard in a motel in the early hours of the morning after recovering from surgery earlier in the year: what was the surgery for? The sensations Maria Elodia describes could be neurological or, if she had slipped into an altered state they were all in her mind. The tingling and waking in terror having heard the voice again could also be psychological and unlike Jean Hingley’s case there was no mysterious ground markings left behind. That would all fit rather nicely and explain things away.

Looking at it from a UFO angle we have the young woman at the motel alone after having seen the last two guests off. How long had the object Mr Pretzel observed been hanging around? It was an unlit road and would the two guests notice the red lights? Doubtful but there is something missing here and that is a complete documented schedule for Maria Elodia that day with times as accurate as can be. She looked at the alarm clock and saw it was 0100 hrs and remembered that the two guests had to be called but what was she doing up to that point since there was just her and the two guests in the motel? The duration of the encounter is odd as is the fact that she could not remember whether she had locked the side door or not and the entity just being there. Were the investigators looking at the wrong period of time in this case?

There seems to have been UFO activity and the red lights were attached to an object near the motel suggests that it and the entity were connected. Why did Mr. Pretzel not see the entity as it left the motel as it was, if correct, at best 2 minutes from when the entity left the motel and Pretzel drove into the car park. Did the entity leave as it was alerted to Pretzel’s imminent arrival? The investigators did an excellent job of covering the period of 0100 to 0110 hours but everything before that...nothing. It is far too late over five decades later to find out and this is why we have a very interesting case but incomplete: always look at how any percipient spent the day and night before an encounter and treat that period of time as being just as important as the duration of the encounter.

We have a very brief (we believe) encounter and no physical evidence as well as one where the supposed percipients undisclosed reason for surgery and physiological and psychological effects could be used to dismiss the case.
